After a few discussions with my friend, Jonathan Stark, about optimizing WebKit transitions, he put together this fantastic test page for animations. You can use the page to add various effects to two menus, like text shadows and transparency, and then see how they animate. If you view on your iPhone or iPod Touch (not Simulator), you’ll notice a huge performance loss when animating with all the effects on — even though WebKit is still using GPU to process the effects.
